The Late Steam Era represents the zenith of steam railroad technology and the peak of railroad dominance in American transportation. From the early 1900s through World War II, railroads moved the nation's freight and passengers without significant competition.
This era saw the development of truly massive steam locomotives, from the 2-8-2 Mikados that handled general freight to the enormous 4-8-8-4 Big Boys that conquered the Rocky Mountains. Articulated locomotives—engines with two sets of drivers under one boiler—became common for heavy service.
