The slope of track expressed as rise over run, typically as a percentage.
Grade is the slope of track, expressed as a percentage (rise over horizontal run). A 2% grade rises 2 feet per 100 feet of travel. Prototype railroads rarely exceed 4% grade; model railroads should generally stay under 3% for reliable operation, especially with long trains.
