Full Definition

Hopper cars carry bulk commodities that can be unloaded through bottom doors. Open hoppers carry coal, ore, and aggregates; covered hoppers protect grain, fertilizer, and other weather-sensitive loads. Hoppers are among the most common freight cars and excellent for building realistic unit trains.
