Burlington Northern was created on March 2, 1970, through the merger of the Great Northern Railway, Northern Pacific Railway, Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad, and Spokane Portland & Seattle Railway. This merger combined four storied railroads into one of America's largest.
The BN adopted a simple but elegant scheme of Cascade Green with white lettering. The railroad operated from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest and California, serving grain, coal, lumber, and other commodities. The BN's vast network included some of the most scenic railroad routes in North America.
BN pioneered unit coal trains from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, revolutionizing coal transportation. The railroad also developed innovative intermodal services and became a leader in railroad efficiency.
Burlington Northern merged with the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1995 to form BNSF Railway. The green scheme was replaced by BNSF's orange and black, though heritage units occasionally appear.
