The London and North Eastern Railway was formed in 1923 from the Great Northern, Great Eastern, North Eastern, and Scottish railways. Under Sir Nigel Gresley, the LNER produced some of the world's most famous steam locomotives.
Flying Scotsman, the first locomotive to be officially recorded at 100 mph, became the most famous steam engine in the world. Mallard, holder of the world speed record for steam at 126 mph since 1938, demonstrated the pinnacle of Gresley's streamlined A4 Pacific design.
The LNER's Apple Green livery for express locomotives was particularly elegant, while the distinctive wedge-fronted A4 Pacifics became icons of the streamlined era. The company also operated innovative high-speed services like the Silver Jubilee.
For modelers, the LNER offers iconic locomotives with excellent availability from Hornby and Bachmann.
