The Southern Railway was formed in 1923 from the London & South Western, London Brighton & South Coast, and South Eastern & Chatham Railways. Under General Manager Sir Herbert Walker, the SR pioneered intensive suburban electrification using third-rail DC current.
The SR served the ports of Southampton and Dover, operating boat trains to connect with ocean liners and cross-channel ferries. The company was known for innovation, including the introduction of multiple-unit electric trains for suburban services.
Steam operations featured elegant Malachite Green livery, with Bulleid's innovative but complex Pacific designs appearing in the 1940s. The Schools class 4-4-0s were Britain's most powerful engines of that wheel arrangement.
The SR is popular with modelers for its combination of steam and electric traction and distinctive green liveries.
