A freight car with a flat deck and no sides or roof, used for large or odd-shaped loads.
Flatcars are the simplest freight cars - essentially a platform on wheels. They carry loads too large or awkward for enclosed cars: lumber, machinery, vehicles, containers, and trailers. Specialized types include bulkhead flats (with end boards), centerbeam flats, and intermodal spine cars.
