The prototype is the real-world railroad, locomotive, car, or structure that a model represents. 'Prototype' can refer to a specific railroad (the prototype for your SP models is the Southern Pacific), a specific piece of equipment, or real railroading in general. Prototype modeling attempts accurate representation of real subjects.
