The movable rails in a turnout that direct trains to the diverging or through route.
Points are the tapered, movable rails at the entry of a turnout that direct trains either straight through or onto the diverging route. The points pivot at one end and move together, guided by a throw bar. When properly adjusted, points should fit snugly against the stock rails without gaps. Poor point adjustment is a common cause of derailments.
