The X-shaped component of a turnout where the diverging rails cross.
The frog is the critical component of a turnout where the inner rails of the diverging routes cross each other, forming an X shape. Frogs can be 'live' (powered, maintaining electrical contact) or 'dead' (insulated, creating a brief power gap). Live frogs (electrofrog) provide better electrical continuity but require careful wiring.
