JR East was formed in 1987 from the privatization of Japanese National Railways. It is the largest of the JR companies by passenger numbers, operating an intensive network of commuter services around Tokyo and Shinkansen lines to northern Honshu.
JR East operates the Tohoku, Joetsu, and Hokuriku Shinkansen lines with distinctive E-series trainsets. The company's Tokyo-area commuter network is the busiest in the world, with iconic trains like the E231 and E233 series carrying millions of passengers daily.
The company is known for punctuality, efficiency, and innovative rolling stock design. JR East's green corporate color appears on signage and some equipment.
For modelers, JR East subjects are extremely well-served by Kato and Tomix, with Shinkansen and commuter EMU sets being particularly popular.
