The New South Wales Government Railways has operated trains in Australia's most populous state since 1855. Operating on standard gauge (4ft 8.5in), the NSWGR built an extensive network serving Sydney's suburbs, regional cities, and interstate connections.
The NSWGR was famous for its distinctive green and yellow livery and for operating some of the largest steam locomotives in the Southern Hemisphere, including the massive AD60 Garratt articulated engines. The railway pioneered air-conditioned passenger services in Australia.
Modern operations are divided between Sydney Trains (suburban), NSW TrainLink (regional/interstate), and freight operators. The XPT (based on British HST design) provides intercity passenger services.
For Australian modelers, the NSWGR is the best-served prototype with models from Auscision, SDS, and Trainorama.
