Queensland Railways operates Australia's largest narrow gauge (3ft 6in, or 1067mm) railway network, covering the vast state of Queensland from Brisbane to Cairns and inland to Mount Isa. The narrow gauge was chosen for its lower construction costs across Queensland's challenging terrain.
QR was famous for its Sunlander passenger service along the North Coast, taking passengers through tropical Queensland. The railway operated impressive Beyer-Garratt articulated steam locomotives to handle the demanding gradients.
Modern QR operates a major coal export network from the Bowen Basin, with some of the world's longest and heaviest trains. The Tilt Train provides tilting passenger services on the narrow gauge lines.
Modeling QR requires narrow gauge track (HOn3½) or compromise approaches. Australian manufacturers produce limited QR equipment.
