S scale occupies a unique niche between HO and O scales. At 1:64 (which happens to match many diecast toys), S scale offers impressive detail and heft while requiring less space than O scale. The scale is closely associated with Gilbert's American Flyer trains, which used S scale from 1946.
S scale was standardized in the 1940s, with American Flyer being the most famous manufacturer. After Gilbert ceased production in 1966, the scale survived through dedicated hobbyists. Today, S Helper Service, American Models, and others keep the scale alive.
